Andrew, lived with his parents, even long after Wham! it became very familiar. A few days ago, Ridgeley required a wake-up call, so he wrote his mom a note on his front door. The note read “Wake me up up,” after realizing that he had did not know a word, he ended the phrase by adding “before you go go.”
George Michael got a kick out of it , and decided to use it for the title of a song. Michael created a song that he named “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go,” and it was Wham’s first American success.
The word “go-go” is a dance club as is dancing the main theme of this song. It describes the story of one man who is head over his head in love with his girlfriend and upset when he learns that she danced while he was asleep. He requests to see if in the future she get him up prior to leaving.
George Michael (born Georgios Panayiotou) and Andrew Ridgeley met at Bushey Meads School in Hertfordshire when they were both in their teens. They became friends and , after having left school, they recorded an impromptu version of “Wham!. The following single “Young Guns (Go For It)” was more popular reaching #3 on the charts in the UK. Their debut single was revised and was their third Top 10 hit. Following two additional Top 10 releases, problems were brewing between the duo and their label. Wham! signed with the former Marc Bolan manager Simon Napier-Bell who fought to get the group freed from Innervision. It was known as a very popular dance during the 1930s, coupled with the finger snaps and lyrics that refer to a simpler era this gives the song an old-fashioned feeling. Another fun relic: the phrase “You make the sun shine brighter than Doris Day,” that refers to the actress-singer who was famous during the 1940s and 1950s.
This was the very first track Wham! created for his Make It Big album. It was recorded by Sarm West Studios in London. Based on Chris Porter, who engineered the session, they didn’t start on a demo track in accordance with the standard procedure. George Michael had the song in his head, and it was recorded by a live band.
A variety of TV shows and films have utilized the track.
Grant Lee sang in the Gilmore Girls episode of 2002 Dead Uncles and Vegetables. His performance is funny, and reverent, unlike Seth Green’s rendition (as Chris Griffin) in the 2005 Family Guy episode “Jungle Love,” where he kills the song.
